Assessment and Learning Improvement Network
The Assessment and Learning Improvement Network is for CSU faculty and staff who want to learn about assessment and learning improvement activities across campus. The Network meets monthly during the academic year to share assessment strategies, information, results, and projects across campus. Meetings are open, and individuals are free to join meetings as they like. Meeting topics will be posted in advance on this page with the registration link. Meeting information will also be shared on the CSU-Assess listerv.
The Network’s goals are to:
- Build capacity to conduct assessment and use the information to make improvements for learning.
- Provide a venue for sharing information like survey results, etc., amongst academic faculty, student affairs and academic support staff.
- Encourage collaboration across units and programs.
- Develop and promote use of equity-minded and ethical assessment practices.

Wednesday, March 6, 2024
1:30 – 2:30 pm
Place: In-person, LSC 300
Topic: Data Governance
Presenter: Laura Jensen, Vice Provost for Planning and Effectiveness
Data governance is about setting internal standards and policies that guide how data are gathered, stored, processed, and disposed of. These policies determine practices for who can access what kinds of data in the program, unit, or institution. Data governance helps insure privacy of student, staff, and faculty data including everything from demographic and contact information to survey responses and participation information.

Wednesday, April 3, 2024
1:30 – 2:30 pm
Place: In-person, LSC 300
Topic: U-Behavior and Student Learning
Presenter: James Folkestad, PhD, Director – Center for the Analytics of Learning and Teaching and University Distinguished Teaching Scholar
U-Behavior is a learning and teaching method that uses the Canvas quiz tool to promote optimal students study behaviors and practices.
Although U-Behavior uses the Canvas quiz tool, it rebrands each quiz as a Retrieval Practice Activity. Targeted behaviors include:
- Spacing the practice of RPAs over time
- Actively recalling information from RPAs without assistance to test your ability
- Interleaving RPA practice over time
- Self-regulating one’s practice
These behaviors are grounded in empirical evidence, and are part of a science-based approach to learning known as the Science of Learning.

Wednesday, May 1, 2024
1:30 – 2:30 pm
Place: In-person, LSC 322
Topic: Implementation Fidelity Assessment
Presenters:
Stephanie Foster, Director of Assessment, Institutional Research, Planning and Effectiveness
Rebekah LeMahieu, Associate Director of Assessment, Institute for Learning & Teaching
Often we have big goals for our programs but they may feel abstract or out of reach. Perhaps we have a sense that our programs are working great for some students but we aren’t reaching others and we don’t know why. Implementation assessment can help you gain a stronger sense of your program’s identity and effectiveness, and help you articulate accomplishments and needs to others. It can help you make better claims about how your program is making a difference and for whom.
