Assessment and Learning Improvement Network
The Assessment and Learning Improvement Network is for CSU faculty and staff who want to learn about assessment and learning improvement activities across campus. The Network meets monthly during the academic year to share assessment strategies, information, results, and projects across campus. Meetings are open, and individuals are free to join meetings as they like. Meeting topics will be posted in advance on this page with the registration link. Meeting information will also be shared on the CSU-Assess listserv.
The Network’s goals are to:
- Build capacity to conduct assessment and use the information to make improvements for learning.
- Provide a venue for sharing information like survey results, etc., amongst academic faculty, student affairs and academic support staff.
- Encourage collaboration across units and programs.
- Develop and promote use of ethical assessment practices.

Topic: Understanding College Student Needs: A Contemporary Snapshot
Pre-pandemic, the Division of Student Affairs regularly participated in the UCLA Higher Education Research Institute’s CIRP Freshman Survey to learn about incoming students’ background characteristics, high school experiences, attitudes, behaviors, and expectations for college. The survey is nationally normed, having surveyed over 15 million students at over 1,900 institutions. The Division of Student Affairs contracted with CIRP to conduct the survey again in Fall 2022 and, while this quantitative survey tells us the “what” of the constructs, it does not delve into the “why”. With faculty and IR partnership, the DSA developed a companion qualitative research project to intentionally capture CSU undergraduate student perspectives at the point in time of coming back to campus after a long stay-at-home period. Join us to learn more about the Freshman Survey results and a snapshot of undergraduate students’ needs and experiences as it relates to academics, mental health and wellbeing, safety, sense of belonging, and engagement in Fall 2023.
